Pregnancy
Women are entitled to equal treatment at work regardless of whether they are pregnant (or might become pregnant in future). A woman cannot be treated unfairly in her employment because she is pregnant.
Here’s an example:
| Luisa had been working for a small family business for three years as a casual. Luisa thought she was doing the right thing when she told her boss she was three months pregnant. Her boss seemed very supportive, but he started to roster her on less and less shifts over the next two months. When Luisa approached her boss, he told her that he needed to look after the staff who were going to ‘stick around’. |
Employers cannot assume that it is unsafe for a woman to work while pregnant or that a pregnant woman will not be able to do a good job. However, where the woman really can't do the job because of the pregnancy, the employer can change her duties or the woman could take maternity leave.
