Political opinion
There are Commonwealth laws that protect workers from discrimination at work because of their political opinion.
It is against the law if, because of your political opinion, you are:
- refused a job
- dismissed from employment
- denied training opportunities
- denied promotion
- subjected to less favourable working conditions or terms of employment
Complaints about being discriminated against because of your political opinion can be made to:
- Fair Work Ombudsman (except for people who work for state governments)
- Australian Human Rights Commission
It is not against the law if the job actually requires someone of a particular political opinion, e.g. working in a Member of Parliament’s office.
