Pregnancy

It is against the law in South Australia to treat a woman unfairly at school because she is, or might become, pregnant.

For example:

Jane was six months pregnant and studying year 11. Jane told her careers counsellor that she wanted to stay at school the following year and complete her SACE. The counsellor told her ‘When the baby arrives, everything will change. Study just won’t be a priority any more’. The counsellor advised the school not to accept Jane’s enrolment for next year until after the baby is born and ‘see how things go’. The school followed the counsellor’s advice. This is pregnancy discrimination.
