Marital or partnership status

Everyone is entitled to equal treatment at school, or in other educational institutions, regardless of their marital or partnership status. This includes being single, married, separated, divorced, widowed or living with a partner, either of opposite sex or the same sex.

However, it doesn’t include a boyfriend or girlfriend that you don’t live with. It is unlawful to treat a student unfavourably in their education because of their marital or partnership status.

De facto couples who have lived together for at least 3 years, or have had a child together, are legally recognised in South Australia and have certain civil rights. Read more about the rights of couples living together.
