Caring responsibilities

Everyone is entitled to equal access to education and fair treatment at school, regardless of their caring responsibilities.

Caring responsibilities means a person’s responsibility to care for an immediate family member, like a parent or sibling with a disability, or a dependent child.

Here’s an example:

Logan lived with his mum, who had a disorder that can cause seizures. Logan was late to school because his mum had a seizure and he needed to wait for another family member to come and help. When Logan arrived at school at about 10 am, his teacher made him explain in front of the entire class why he was late. Logan hated people knowing about his mum’s illness and felt humiliated. This is caring responsibilities discrimination.

Support for young carers

Young people who are carers can access services, like help for their family member, school tutoring and social activities with other carers. For more about what’s available for young carers, see the Young carers page on sa.gov.au.
