Pregnancy
It is against the law to treat a woman unfairly in community life because she is pregnant or might become pregnant. Here’s an example of pregnancy discrimination in club membership:
| Truc is a committee member at a service club, experienced in events management. Truc was the main organiser of an annual community event run by the club, which she enjoyed and also put on her CV. Truc became pregnant and her baby was due just a few weeks after the event. The committee members decided that Truc couldn’t be relied on to organise the event that year and appointed someone else. |
Acting on assumptions about what a person can and can’t do is a common cause of discrimination.
