Disability
Everyone has the right to equal treatment in community life, whether or not they have a disability. People with disabilities are also entitled to reasonable assistance to help them take part in community life.
Disability includes illnesses (mental or physical, temporary or chronic), physical disabilities, learning or intellectual disabilities, having an infection (such as Hep C or HIV) or being at risk of developing a disability in future. Not all disabilities are visible.
Here’s an example of disability discrimination in community life:
| Finn has Tourette’s syndrome, and has some mannerisms that he can’t fully control. For instance, he can’t keep still for long and needs to move his hands and head around, and sometimes he swears without meaning to. Finn wanted to join a film club but the secretary told him he couldn’t because his presence in the audience would distract the other members from the film. |
What do you think the film club should do?
